- "The 1871 Census record of Kirkcaldy lists Grannie as Jemima
Cant, Servant, Fem, 13 years old--a General Domestic in home of John
Brown and his wife Barbara who had a 1-year old son; address 47 Berwick
Place. She was from Fifeshire, Cowdenbeath." (HMR)
- "The Fife Free Press, [Wedding] November 17, 1883:
At 74 Alexandra Street, Kirkcaldy, on the 9th inst, by Mr. Thomas
Harrow, Peter Murray, gardner, to Jemima, fourth daughter of Henry
Cant." (HMR) [Married November 9, 1883 in Kirkcaldy, Fife Shire.]
- "Grannie and Grandad were married in Kirkcaldy then
lived in Aberlady where the first of three of their
daughters were born. There is no evidence that they ever lived in
Edinburgh. The marriage record says Grandad was from Inch
Liberton. There is an area, now part of greater Edinburgh,
called Liberton which until 80 years ago was country summer homes
of people who lived elsewhere (probably Edinburgh) and it is likely
Grandad worked here until he married. The village of Aberlady had
two large farms at that time and it is probable that he worked on
one of these after marriage." (HMR)
- "Passenger list for the Allan Line 'Scandinavian' Royal Mail
Steamer; Port of Embarkation--Glascow; Bound for Halifax; April 4,
1889:
Murray, Pet.; Lab., age 30--Toronto
Family: Jsse, age 31
Bessie, age 7
Jan, age 4 1/2
Mag, age 2
Helen, age 7/12" (HMR)
- "Viewed the microfilm of the 1891 Census for Stamford [Canada].
Found the family:
W 2/8 Murray Peter, age 32, Scotland, Pres., Farm
Laborer
Jemima, age 30, wife, Scotland, Baptist
Elizabeth, age 9, daughter, Scotland, Baptist
Jeanette, age 6, daughter, Scotland, Baptist
Margaret, age 4, daughter, Scotland, Baptist
Ellen, age 2, daughter, Scotland, Baptist"
- "Census was taken on April 14th. Mother was born April
10th, but is not mentioned. The new 'daughter' Elizabeth has us
intrigued. The 'W 2/8' appears in front of Grandad's name and the
name above him--Thompson Archibald. It would seem Grandad lived
on his farm and probably worked for him." (HMR)
- "Niagara Falls 1986: I went on the People Mover down to
see the greenhouses. The central part in front looks the same as
when Grandad worked there (we have a photo taken in 1930), but
it has been greatly added onto." (HMR)
- Obituary: "Peter Murray, retired horticulturist died suddenly
of a heart attack on Friday, May 16, 1947, at the home of his daughter,
Mrs. John A. Hurley, Hillside, Maryland. Mr. Murray was born in
Scotland. In early married life he went to Canada where he was
employed as Superintendent of Parks at Niagara Falls. He later
moved with his family to the United States, where he spent many
years landscaping and beautifying the grounds of ancestral homes
in the New England States.
- Peter and Jemima are buried together at Manomet Congregational
Church in Manomet, MA (HMR & AMS); daughters Janet and Agnes
are buried with them.
